Deep Geothermal Heat Potential of the Munich Metropolitan Region

Deep Geothermal Heat Potential of the Munich Metropolitan Region

The deep geothermal heat potential is particularly high in southern Bavaria. According to this, up to 67% of the heat requirement could be covered with deep geothermal energy in the Munich metropolitan region alone. Our latest study shows an assessment of the potential for heat supply based on the production data of active geothermal systems. Accordingly, the selected approach differs from the usual volumetric approaches, which require detailed knowledge of the reservoir properties. Specifically, the metropolitan region of Munich is chosen as the study area, which covers around 40% of the total area of Bavaria (most of the southern German Molasse Basin) and 45% of the inhabitants of Bavaria. Furthermore, the potentials with regard to consumers as well as economic efficiency and sustainability aspects were included.
