Review of the 2nd GeoLaB Scientific Workshop 2026
GAB presents ideas on EGS
The Geothermal Alliance Bavaria (GAB) took part in the 2nd GeoLaB Scientific Workshop in Karlsruhe on 12 and 13 March 2026. The event offered an excellent opportunity to exchange views with researchers and partner institutions on current developments in deep geothermal energy.
In the morning of the second workshop day, Fabian Uth, research associate in GAB project coordination team, delivered a keynote titled ‘Geothermal Energy as a Strategic Domestic Resource for Germany and the Enabling Role of Enhanced Geothermal Systems.’ In his presentation, he addressed the key strategic potentials of deep geothermal energy for Germany’s energy transition, as well as technical and planning prerequisites for deploying EGS. Complementing this, GAB project lead Nora Medgyesi and Anastasia Sidorova, research associate in GAB project coordination team, presented on ‘A Roadmap for Horizontal Multistage EGS Heating Projects in Germany: Assessing Deployment Potential and Limiting Factors.’ Both contributions provided important impulses for further discussion within the session ‘EGS/Fracturing acceptability.’
Overall, GAB looks back on two productive days filled with many new points of networking. It was a great pleasure to meet numerous GAB network partners in person in Karlsruhe.
About the GeoLaB Scientific Workshop
The two-day scientific workshop of the GeoLaB consortium (the Helmholtz Centers KIT, GFZ, and UFZ in cooperation with TU Darmstadt) brought together experts from across the research community to examine technical questions related to petrothermal geothermal energy, with a particular focus on field laboratories. The event presented valuable new insights from the exploration of the ‘Tromm’ site across several thematic sessions, ranging from experimental design to AI-assisted data analysis.
The diversity of presentations highlighted how strongly the community is moving toward integrated, digitally supported research approaches. At the same time, the workshop provided space for open discussions on societal acceptance, technical feasibility, and the strategic importance of geothermal energy in Germany.
