Petrothermal Geothermal Energy & Enhanced Geothermal Systems

A REVIEW

In Bavaria, the use of deep geothermal energy is currently concentrated exclusively on hydrothermal resources in the well-explored Molasse Basin in southern Bavaria. However, international expert studies see the greatest future potential of geothermal energy in the successful implementation of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) projects, for which northern Bavaria is predestined according to geological criteria. However, despite several decades of experience worldwide with EGS technology, no standardized process has yet been established.

The review presented here takes a critical look at the EGS technology and the term “petrothermal geothermal energy” and tries to show the conditions under which this technology can have a future in Bavaria. In particular, the previous experiences should be discussed using examples in order to derive the open research questions and the effort required for a successful development of the technology in Bavaria.
